If you weren't low on coolant and the coolant wasn't oily then I would have not suspected the head gasket. But, having a fresh head gasket isn't a bad thing.
I'm suspecting the the oil seal in the turbo is bad. When the PVC is not functional, you can build positive pressure in the crank case. If my understaning is correct, the oil that feeds the turbo just drains back to the sump by gravity. If there is positve pressure then the oil will not drain. So where does the oil go? In my classic 900, I saw a lot of oil going into the intake.
I would get the PVC fixed and see if it minimized the problem and or look at the line where the turbo oil drains. Maybe it is plugged up.
