'97 SET Upper Idler Pulley Gone

Last night around midnight my son was driving home from the gym. The upper idler pulley bearing seized and ate the serpentine belt and the plastic part of the pulley. Luckily, he was only 1 1/2 miles from home and the air temp was well below freezing. Today I changed the tensioner pulley and the upper idler pulley that I had bought a few months ago, and did the short belt mod. On Swedecar's recomendations, I went with a 6PK-2460 belt, which at Advance Auto Parts is a 5060968 belt. It fit just fine. The tensioner is right in the middle of the wear indicator. The only problem I had was getting the new belt over all the pulleys. I found that putting it over the AC pulley first, then the crank pulley, then the water pump and power steering pulley, then up to the tensioner pulley, back down to the alternator and up to the upper idler pulley worked the best for me. The only problem that I had was remembering a post about one of the two pulley bolts having reverse threads. Neither of the bolts that I changed had reverse threads. Many thanks to all that contributed to the short belt mod. It worked for me in about 2 hours. And thank God the garage was heated today... Ron
