Just over a month ago I put a new outer CV joint on the passenger side of my '02 93. Worked great and my car was finally free of clunks. About 2 weeks ago my car developed a loud "roar" that increased with vehicle speed. Thinking it was a tire that was down to the wear bars, I replaced it. No change in the noise. Over time the noise has gotten much worse and the car will now give you a headache after a few minutes at speed. No pops or clunks that CV joints are known for. Yesterday I had some spare time, so I pulled the passenger front wheel off and noticed the new CV joint had spewed out most of its grease. Upon closer examination I saw the big end of the boot had come loose from the joint. The band was in good condition, but it failed to do its job. I have the fancy crimping pliers I bought from Snap-On so I can't use that as an excuse. I used an aftermarket joint and the boot that came with it is stiff and the clamp was not near as robust as the original clamp.
I guess I have two questions -- should I try and clean out this joint and reuse it or just replace it? It probably has 3,000 miles on it. Last night I repacked the joint as best I could "in-situ" and replaced the boot using the old clamp. Everything was very greasy so the boot was a little loose. The roar was better at first, but after an hour of driving was as bad as ever. When I slid under the car today the boot was loose, but hadn't come off the joint yet. And, what is the trick to getting these boots to stay in place? Do I need to use a Saab joint or have others had success with the aftermarket models?
Thanks for your help,
Shawn
