I have a 01 9-3 base and my battery was going a while back. It was leaking and was causing quite a bit of corrosion around the positive terminal. I coated that damn terminal in dielectric grease and it still corroded. I noticed that as soon as I replaced the battery and the terminal I had a increase in gas mileage, top end performance, and throttle response.
So, I would say in some instances replacing the battery can increase fuel mileage.
Oh, and btw, the battery is used in the car system while it is running to stabilize voltage. A lot of power is coming the alternator, but it passes through the battery which regulates the current flow, It acts lie a big capacitor. Visa a Vis, if your battery is working fine then the electrical system of your car is functioning more efficently.
