Thanks for the responses everyone.

They discovered they did not put what they called the "heat shield" back in place properly- a piece of metal that lies between the struts and the brakes [I could be screwing this explanation up].

The good news: The noise is gone, the ride quality is improved, the car handles great and the brakes work now better than ever. The bad news: Their work on the car has fouled up a wheel bearing and I need to go back in there tomorrow to get it sorted.

They're usually quite good and this is unusual. At least they're not charging me for any of this [at least I don't think they are and I'll scream bloody murder if they do...].
