One way to check engine oil pressure Posted by Walt [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: '97 900S oil pressure issues, bazil burns, Tue, 20 May 2008 05:46:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The Haynes manual for NG900 says proper oil pressure should be 2.7 bar (39 psi) at 2000 rpm using 10W-30 oil. Assume this is hot oil which makes less pressure than cold oil. Haynes also states that oil pressure warning light switch turns light on when pressure falls to/below 0.3 to 0.5 bar (4.4 to 7.3 psi). So relying on oil pressure switch and its dash light is NOT a good way to tell if engine has adequate oil pressure. On non-turbo 2.3L motors, there's a plugged 14x1.5 mm fitting on oil filter housing, which can be used to temporarily plug in an oil pressure gauge. These gauges are sold for around $25 online. A 14x1.5 mm male to 1/8 female NTP adapter needed to connect the gauge can be bought at NAPA. After cleaning my oil pickup screen, my 90K mile 2.3 motor showed 60 psi with cold oil. There's a good series of Nines article reprints on NG900 oil pressures, oil cooling, and oil sludging on the website listed below.
