Alarm Death Rattle then no power

2001 9-3 50,000 mi. Alarm went off spontaneously thus hit the lock button to cancel. But then key fob buttons don't unlock or lock door. Then tried ignition and got dim idiot lights (no SID or turn over power). Car turned over and alarmed itself fine the previous evening.
Next morning no lights at all. Is this just a case of dead battery or could the alarm/locking system be shorting and drawing power?
Last time by battery died it was gradual and the alarm did not scream out any last requests.
