Car is a 2000 Viggen with 170,000 KM. Coming home from a 600 mile trip on the highway A/C started to act up, no cold air, in a matter of minutes battery light on dash lit up, temperature gauge hit the roof then plunged to nothing. Got off the highway in short order, opened hood to see belt was off pulleys and engine was super hot. Arranged for a tow home and today had a look at things. Should note that serp. belt and pulley were replaced at 100 KM. Situation is this;
- looks like coolant has just about gone
- idler pully is partially melted, belt in tact but twisted and brittle
- A/C pulley/clutch is wobbly and growls when spun by hand but does spin, PS, water pump, alternator and tensioner pulleys spin freely with no noises.
- battery measures 12.5 volts and car starts (only have ever used Mobil-1)
So, what to do, obviously replace belt,idler,coolant (possibly temp. sensors as gauge went to zero ??)but what about the A/C ? Can one just replace pulley/clutch or only the whole compressor and if so how does the pulley/clutch come off and how hard is it to R&R compressor ?
Would appreciate recommendations. Thank you
