Ok, this sounds crazy but I did mine by cutting the sheet metal around the inspection hole. mine was more out of necessity then anything else (was stuck far from home but in a parking lot across the street from AutoZone, LUCKY!)
Anyway, I bought the pump only, and a pair of tin snips. If you are careful it is not that big of a deal and actually makes it quite easy. You only have to open up the hole a little anyway. If you do it this way you can pull the pump out and swap the parts all within 45 min. Just be sure that you align the pump the same way you took it out. If not the gas gauge will be off.
Super easy job and well worth it to not have to drop the tank.
Oh and be careful not to drip gas in the car. You dont want to be smelling that.
Good luck.
