There is probably an inherent problem with the car. Sounds like a vacuum leak or bad AIC. The reason for the different actions after you change the battery is that you had the battery unhooked long enough to reset the ECU parameters, so it was trying to "relearn" the system.
Another possibility is a bad leak in the evap system/purge valve.
Is there any codes and/or CEL?
