Just a thought. There was no heat because the coolant could not flow through the system due to a blockage somewhere from frozen coolant.

As you drive, the heat from the engine starts heating the coolant surrounding it (and melting any that might be frozen. Still can't go anywhere due to blockage. The coolant starts going way over temp as it's being trapped in the block. As it expands and starts vaporizing, it builds enough pressure to blow out the hose

Coolant flows from the from the engine to the top of the radiator and out through the bottom. Your t-stat was probably flowing, allowing some coolant to flow into the pipe.

I think the frozen section was in your radiator which prevented the coolant from passing, building pressure within the intake side/engine. That is what blew the top radiator hose.

The radiator MIGHT have been damaged from the expanding coolant as it froze. In addition, the pressure/heat of the backup in the cooling system MAY have blown your head gasket - a lot pressure can develop because of the steam buildup. This can be evidenced by the fact that you had white steam coming out the back - coolant getting burned in the cylinders. BrooksG is probably right in that your antifreeze mix was either inadequate, or past it's useful life which allowed the freezing.

Info: Ethylene Glycol protects lower (about -34) compared to Propylene Glycol (about -27) at 50/50. Additionally, there are "arctic" antifreeze that can protect to about -50 or so (not sure how it does for heat protection though).

Check your oil to see if there's coolant in it. Do a compression check to see if you've blown the gasket/warped the head/etc.) If compression is ok, and you don't see coolant in your oil, you may be ok.
