The fuel light coming on is NOT a big deal - it's just to let you know the tank is low...unless you kept driving until you actually ran out of gas.

Running out of gas can cause the fuel pump to burn out as it is the fuel flowing that cools the pump.

Of course, the fuel level sender might be defective and didn't read a low level until you were actually empty.

If it's ok on hard acceleration and only happens in a hard turn, I would think the problem is NOT the pump unless there is some kind of problem in the pickup. If it bogs under hard straight-line acceleration also, it may be the pump not being able to deliver the fuel volume necessary. There are other things that can produce similar problems - fuel filter, fuel check valve, etc.
