gas leak from tank area when full

My daughers NG 900, which she has just started driving again after storing for most of the past year, has a gassy smell and a slight gas leak from the tank area after being given a very full fill.
The local garage, which is not at all experienced with Saabs, put it on the lift, and poked around, using a mirror to try and see the top of the tank, and said they thought the seal on one of the top fittings was probably leaking.
They said there was a lot of rust around the tank, so they didn't want to remove it unless abolutely necessary, and said the easiest thing to do was just not fill it over 3/4 full, which she is doing, and has pretty much alleviated the problem for now.
I am thinking of doing the cut-the-back floor trick next time I am out there, to see if I can spot the problem and fix it.
Any advice or thoughts? Are there any known troublespots that might be the cause?
