Rear brake-pads replaced.... what did do wrong?

My 2001 9-3 needs breaks... both Front & Rear.
Until I could get to it, I've been driving the Jeep to and from work -- only 2.5 miles. But miss the turbo.
So, today, I replaced the rear brake-pads. During the removal/replacement job, a lot of brake-fluid drained out. I don't recall this happening some 5+ years ago when I changed the rear-pads on my 1995 900s.
Regardless, got the job completed.... and re-filled the master-cylinder with brake-fluid.
As I pump the brake-pedal, it when from 'soft' to 'hard',,, then 'soft' again, with the pedal going to the floor.
What did I do wrong?
What do I need to do know?
The emergency brake works, but cannot easily (safely) drive car to mechanic.
Could really use some assistance...
PS: Last time, when I did the 900s, I was following the Haynes manual. Not this time...
PS: I don't have a Motive Power Bleeder as I've seem referenced on this bulletin board. Is this necesary to bleed the brake-lines? cost is about $40-50.
Latly, it's been almost 4 years since I've posted on this bulletin board... hope everyone is doing well.
Thanks in advance,
Ed R
