I have had two of the SAAB factory red direct ignition cassettes (DIC) go bad on my NG900.
The first DIC failed at 68,000-miles and was original to the car. I had stopped at a strip mall and when I returned to the car, the car would crank over but not start. When I opened the hood, there was a very strong smell of burnt epoxy. I installed my spare DIC from the trunk and the car started on the first try.
The second DIC failed at 108,000-miles by developing an occasional miss-fire at idle. I tried new spark plugs, but the problem persisted until I installed my spare DIC.
Now I carry the miss-firing DIC as a spare.
