I recently bought a 1996 convertible and, even though the top works, I have been fretting over what I would do when it stops functioning. I have done quite a bit of searching and found a possible solution on a different message board that I thought I would cut and paste here for future reference for all of us who have the same concern. I can't vouch for whether this works or not and I won't try it until the top on my cvt craps out, but here it is:

Yes it is possible. Mine is operated manually. The dealer Quoted me $4000 to fix the top. Not worth it in my books since I paid $1800 for the car and it is an 95. You will have to remove the motor under the tonneau cover. Once that is removed you can open the tonneau with a pair of vice grips. When lowering the top just open the tonneau cover and move the rear window up. Then you unlatch the main roof and move it manually back against the rear window and slide everything back under the tonneau. Drop the tonneau down and secure it with a set of vice grips. I have been using this method for about a year. The P.O also used the manual method for over 4 years. Roof is still in good shape and does not leak.
It takes me about 15 seconds to lower my roof manually.;)"
B. Sorry I forgot to mention that I had to replace my SID for a non convertible one because of the check latches fault every time I moved from a stop. I just found one at the wreckers.
C.Lowering the top manually: The hang up is the unlatching the fifth bow. Moving the ffth bow to the vertical position is the first thing you need to do. To use the car's electrical system to latch or unlatch the fifth bow, you must find connector H10-15. It is near the left side of that square rod that rotates to raise or lower the tonneau cover. Disconnect H10-15, and find the male pins for positions 8 and 9. The numbers are molded into the connector. 12V to male pin 8 and ground to male pin 9 unlatches the fifth bow. power to 9 and ground to 8 latches the bow. Of course you must move the release lever to manually move the fifth bow, the tonneau cover and the top.
