This is a very common problem. It can leave you stranded if it isn't fixed.
You should be able to do a search in the forum and find references on how to do it yourself. It is a real pain for manual shift cars and quite a bit easier for automatics. It is possible by twisting the center console but you have to do it by the "braille" method.
I believe the Haynes manual goes through the process by unlinking the manual shifter. but search the forum, I think I wrote up a couple posts regarding it.
