Is the Lower Spring Spacer really needed?

I am all set to reassemble my front struts (96 900se conv.) and looked at eEuroparts diagram to double check the assembly and noticed I lack the bottom spring spacer (#31 in the diagram). There were none on the car when I took them off (I am pretty sure the struts are original w/ 155K on them). Also I don’t see them anywhere (either old or new) on the very detailed platonoff website for the strut job. I really want to put this thing back together today. Do I need these spacers?
