engine temperature - overheating?

Need some help on a holiday weekend. 2002 9-3 SE, about 80k miles. Great car, few problems over the years. Yesterday I notice the temperature gauge is reading near the top of the white range, not quite into the red. No light coming on, no loud fan noise. Drive home 30 miles from work, drives fine, stays at that exact spot on the temp gauge. Coolant checked, seems fine.
This am, goes from about 1/2 up the gauge to that exact spot in about 4 minutes of driving, stays there on the drive to work. Car drives fine. Oil is ok, changed 2k miles ago.
Problem, I am supposed to drive to the beach 2.5 hrs away after work today to meet my family, drive back monday am. My supreme saab specialist in durham NC is unavailable till Tuesday. Any suggestions before I have to face decision to drive this pm? From reading this board I am wondering if it is just a faulty thermostat and ok to drive temporarily. Any help appreciated!
Jeff
