I used Boone B's method through the top today (it worked well) and I just wanted to add a few points (97 900S 5SPD 2.3l)
First, I could see where pulling it out the bottom would be faster BUT I really didn't want to mess with the exhaust bolts and clamps. In our salt laden winter roads they get to be a pain so I went for the top removal.
Second, it's not totally clear from the post that you need to remove the upper alternator mounting bracket AFTER removing the alternator so you've got enough room to take the alternator out the top after pulling the mounting bracket through the top.
Third, on my model, it was necessary to also remove the tensioner mechanism (8mm hex) to get at the pretty well hidden upper alternator bolt. There are only two bolts to remove to get the alternator out, the lower pivot bolt (8mm hex) and the upper pivot bolt (8mm hex). The lower is easy to see, the upper is almost impossible to see.
Fourth, I didn't have to remove the airbox. It was a bit tight but doable if your pry bar / pipe extension isn't too thick.
Finally, since I had to do it in one day and didn't have time to order a bosch rebuild online, I got one from autozone and it didn't have the pulley so I had to take the pulley off the old one (fairly easy w/ a 24mm socket and a vise) and put it on the new one which was a pain since it isn't keyed and it's difficult to get it to grab enough to crank down the 24mm nut (the shaft wants to spin).
I'd recommend a bosch with the pulley already on.
