Wow, Swedecar, that's a lot of leaves.
Coincidentally, I just cleared my 1999 9-3 out today.
I followed the directions here
http://photo.platonoff.com/Auto/
specifically
http://photo.platonoff.com/Auto/20060118.Saab_NG900_Cabin_Filter/
this is for the 1994 - 1998 Saab 900 but the 9-3 is the same as the 900 in this regard.
Even if you don't take the wiper mechanism off you can get remove 90% of the leaves and debris by hand. Then get a shop vac to suck up or blow the other leaves and debris out of there.
Don't forget to check the elephant trunk (this is the rubber drain that drains from the center to the engine compartment. After I cleaned all the debris out of the sump area I poured water slowly in to the trough and only a trickle came out of the elephant trunk (great name - as soon as you see it you will say "elephant trunk"). I put my finger into the hole at the end of the elephant trunk and took a lot of composted leaves out of there - they were BLACK! Now this area drains perfectly.
Also don't forget to check the drainage to the passenger's side.
good luck
easy to do. just take your time and follow the instructions.
