Hello all,
I thought it would be helpful for some of you to compile the procedure on how to pull the codes without the OBD1 reader on 1994-95 Saab 900s. I am not sure if it works the same for other models.
To pull the codes:
Turn the ignition off.
Find the OBD connector underneath the driver's side dash.
Jump connectors 7 and 16. The connectors are lined up starting from the upper row, left side, moving to the right. That means Connector 1 is the first one on the upper row, left corner, and connector 8 is still on the upper row, right corner, and so on for the lower row.
Connect a wire on Connector 6. Turn the ignition switch to the on position (do not turn engine on)
Ground the other end of the wire coming from Connector 6 for about 3 seconds only.
The CEL will start blinking the first digit of the code, then will make a small pause, next will blink a number of times for the second digit.
The CEL might have a longer blink to indicate there is a second code. The CEL will keep repeating the blinking until the ignition switch is turned off. I recommend to let do this to make sure you get all the codes.
Now, on to the hard to pin point code 73.
There is nothing officially specified on this code but after a a lot of searching on this forum and other places in the internet I came to the conclusion that the most likely fault is the ELCD purge valve. I read that when this valve becomes inoperative, the result is a CEL with a vacuum leak code. Some people have been successful cleaning it and some have to replace it. I was lucky and didn't have to do any of that. It was just the vacuum hose being deteriorated, to the solution for me was a new vacuum hose to the throttle body and the CEL went away.
Where is the ELCD valve?
Remove the intake air hose on the driver's side.
The valve is held with a rubber ring that is attached to the strut housing in the engine side. Do a search on eeuroparts.com to see how it looks.
Hope this write up helps.
