9-3 Nightmare...Please help

I bought a 1999 9-3 back in August - one owner, 82k miles. I had to replace the brakes and also to deal with a "key not recognized" message that was often preventing me from dealing with the car.
Since then the car has been in the shop more than it has been out of the shop, all with CEL problems. The latest I heard was that the ignition cassette had to be replaced because the spark plugs the non-Saab mechanic put in the car killed the DIC (this was the second DIC issue). I will state that this last trip was the first one to a Saab specialist rather than a general guy who was winging it...
It has only been a week (and I haven't driven the car much), but no message so far (except for replace key battery...)
Does it get better with these cars? Is the 9-3 just a nightmare and going to spend all of its time in the shop or is there a light at the end of the tunnel? I'm tempted to dump it for whatever I can get and buy a BMW or Mercedes...
Any thoughts would be appreciated..
