Do a query on "tonneau gear" and you will find a lot of posts on the repair. You will need to install a hinge reinforcing kit, which is simply two angle brackets, with a longer hinge pin.
It is a poor design by Saab on the tonneau motor assembly. There are two gears which must mesh in order for the tonneau cover to raise. It is hinged so that, if there is a motor failure, you can pull an emergency release, disengaging the gears, allowing the tonneau cover to operate manually.
The gears are steel, but the housing is aluminum, and is not sufficiently strong to handle the stresses. The housing bends, and the gears disengage. You will need to carefully bend the housing back to its original position. I did mine using pipe wrenches.
One tip that has served me well for several years, after repeated repairs, I fitted the gears together, and noticed that gears would mesh better if I put two hardware store washers behind the one gear. Since doing this I've had no further issues with my 1998 convertible tonneau motor.
