In addition to checking the connections at the battery be sure to check the connections at the other end of the battery cables.
The connection at the starter with the positive cable is a sometimes trouble spot.
About sinking dollars in to a 10 year old car.
I suggest you take a good look at the overall condition of the one you have to see if you have tirees brakes or major service due all at once in the near future. Any old car will take some expense for up keep beyond normal fluid changes. Add up the additional taxes, insurance cost, and monthly payments on a newer car before deciding $1000/year in repairs is too much to keep the one you have. If you buy a later model used (one that is off new car warranty) you will likely have some additional maitenance cost to consider as well.
