The heater box issue on those was for a range of 9-3s where they used the wrong grease at the factory to lubricate the air distribution drum in the heater box. (I have a 2000 9-3 that had this problem and was fixed under warranty.) If this one you are looking at had that problem it would have shown up long ago. If the air flow knob turns the drum freely, you are good to go.
At a price of $2k, if it checks out mechanically, then you are getting a good deal in my opinion. Mine has 170k miles now and you may have to replace a few parts over the next 50k miles, but with a $2k investment...that's not a big deal. If it is mechanically sound, you are getting a great car and there are lots of tips here to fix the simple things.
