Ok to glide in gear with engine off? Posted by keith [Email] (#1462) [Profile/Gallery] (more from keith) on Tue, 22 Feb 2011 18:55:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Have 1999 9-3 convertible. In terms of damage to the engine, I was wondering if it was ok to glide down a hill with the car off but the car in gear (manual transmission)?
Reason I ask.
I live is Salt lake city, UT. One of the canyons up to the ski resorts is 17 miles with a steep enough grade that one can glide down with the car off (save gas and pollution). With the car off and in neutral, one losses power steering and brakes. However, with the car in gear while off one still has full control of the car. I have done this for a short period of time
The question: is this doing any harm to the engine? Obviously the vac system works fine, I know the water pump is connect to the engine, so if that engine turns water circulates. One thing I am not sure of is oil. I know in older cars the oil pump was also mechanical and worked when ever the engine turned. Is that still true with this saab? That is about all I can think of that could be a problem. Anyone else have any thoughts. Can I do this for 17 miles?
Thanks
keith
