If you can find a well maintained 1999-2002 9-3, it should last. I bought a 2000 9-3 new and it is still going strong at 170,000+ miles. Yes, it has needed a few things from time to time, but many of them I have been able to do myself with the help of this board. (Like you, I will fix what I can, but take it to an indy Saab mechanic for anything more extensive.)
The key with this model year range is to make sure oil changes were done frequently, preferably with synth oil, and that it has had all the technical service bulletin items done it, as there have been some sludge issues if it has not been well maintained. But, if you get a good one, it should be a dependable daily driver.
