I had a devil of a time with the clutch cable on my 97 990S 2.3L manual. It would get really hard to push like Christina describes then not disengage fully, then the cable would break, usually in the middle of nowhere. After going through 3 cables (all from eeuro) over about 5 years, I gave up on the damn things and did the hydraulic clutch conversion. It was a hell of a lot of work but I don't regret it. As far as the cable clutch was concerned, I checked the path of the cable, bends, etc. Nothing made it last. I assumed the thrust bearing in the clutch was bad however when I got in there to put in the hydraulic parts, it was fine. There is a funky bracket where the cable comes out of the firewall that is part of the "auto adjust" mechanism. Perhaps the cable is not engaged there? (it's got a rubber grommet that goes into the bracket). You can sometimes get it to work OK by grabbing the cable in the spring adjust area and jacking it up and down a bit, it sort of resets the "adjustment".
