Strut mounts vs. strut bearings only

A question for folks who have seen strut mounts...how often to the strut mounts fail (rubber/steel cracking/separating) vs. strut bearings?
In my on-going quest to quiet my front suspension I'm going to replace the wheel bearings...which means taking out the struts...which means replacing other stuff. I know I need at least one strut bearing (crunching at top of strut when a helper turns the steering wheel). I've been reading the horror stories of aftermarket strut mounts and I'm wondering if I can get away with keeping the OEM ones and just replacing the bearings and saving myself $200.
The tops of the struts do not seem to move much when turning or bouncing on the front end.
The car has 120,000 miles but it's a no-rust California car and all the other rubber bits look OK.
