Over the past few weeks I've taken apart and reassembled my front end to varying degrees twice. Here's what I've learned for the home mechanic:
1) Best tool for the money is a pitman arm puller (~$20). You will need this for the tie-rod ends and ball joints. Pickle forks did not work for me for either.
2) The specialized ball joint tool required is hard to find and expensive. Instead, disconnect the control arm at the chassis, remove the axle from the hub, and use the pitman arm puller.
3) If your car is anything like mine, your axles are seized in the hub. To get them out, buy (~$25) or borrow (from the auto parts store) a hub puller which will force the axle out the back of the hub while pulling on the wheel bolts.
4) Aftermarket strut mounts and bearings are complete crap. Mine looked fine, so I repacked the strut bearings and put them back in.
5) Wheel bearings: Take them to a machine shop to have the bearings replaced. The machinist said his press gauge read 14 tons to get the bearings out. He charged me $30 per side, well worth it.
