I have a 2000 Viggen with 130k miles that gave me the low coolant message that I kind of shrugged off cause the temp gauge looked perfectly fine. I cleared the SID message and figured I would look at it when I got back. Turned the car off and the fan was running pretty loud, popped the hood and the reservoir was empty. I fill it up and take it for a spin keeping an eye on temps(never goes above normal(hopefully not a faulty temp gauge)) and notice its leaking from the passenger side right near the front of the engine block. I had to go away for two weeks and wanted to deal with this when i got back so the car sat unused. I get back and fill the reservoir with water to run it out to the shop which is 20 min away and my friend who is helping me drop it off says there is a mist coming from the exhaust on acceleration.
The shop takes a look at the car and says that my water pump is leaking and needs to be replaced, but then after reading up on coolant problems on here I noticed a trend of faulty head gaskets causing smoke/liquid coming from the exhaust(I just had water in the coolant reservoir). I called the shop with my concern and they said the compression tests were OK so it shouldnt be a problem. (im still waiting for the head mechanic to call me back about it though).
Could the fact that the car had been sitting for two weeks have anything to do with the mist from the exhaust?
Could a busted water pump cause the car to overheat and ruin the headgasket or warp the head? The temp gauge never went above normal....
Would a compression test rule out a faulty head gasket? Also would the engine temps affect the head gasket/compression test?
I dont want to spend an arm and a leg to get this fixed (even though just the WP will be a fair share of $$$) but I do want to fix it right so I dont have to send the car right back to the shop and spend even more on labor. I apologize for the long post but I wanted to post as much information as possible to avoid a long thread of questions that can be answered up front. Hopefully I can just have the head re torqued if coolant is leaking into the engine and escape with a replaced water pump.
Thanks in advance,
Will
