Well let me see if I can describe what to look for.
The shift shaft comes from inside the car through the firewall right in the middle where you would expect. It connects to the transmission via a linkage that should move in relation to the shift lever inside the car. The linkage is connected to a brassy colored rod that goes into the transmission.
If you have a friend move the shifter left and right you should see the brass colored rod twist a few degrees at the transmission. If the friend moves the shifter forward and backward the rod should move opposite to the motion of the shifter. You may need a flashlight and if something is broken it should be more or less obvious.
I don't mean to sound like I'm talking down, but I don't know you.
