The tapered roller bearing on the output shaft is a press fit. We have a puller with two arms that attatches to two rings that screw into the housing using the 5th gear cover bolt holes. The center of the puller pushes down on the shaft and the arms pull the case up.
It takes a special tool to press this bearing back on the shaft too. There is a crush sleeve on the shaft inside the gearbox and that large nut is tightened with a special socket with numbers on the side. When going back together you have to use a new crush sleeve and stake nut and use the calibrated socket along with a dial indicator to set the bearing pre-load.
