Fuel Pump Replaced - Now empty at 9 galloons

Obviously I messed up something when I replaced the fuel pump with after market pump. It works, but the fuel gauge reads slightly over 1/2 when full and quits sucking gas at about 9 gallons.
I was pretty sure I had it placed correctly. Perhaps it moved when I turned it to align it.
I am planning to drop the tank and reposition it. Any tips on how to not do this again?
