Yeah the PCV nipple at valve cover will spew out oil fumes that can easily get sucked into the vent system so I'm pretty sure that's what it was.
Anything and everything gets brittle with age and if they are not a specialist on Saab's they might not see small things like that when working at the other end of engine/transmission.
The engine has to be hung from a crossbar when transmission is removed so maybe it got in contact with that nipple and cracked it. Hard to say?
