My 2000 9-3 was rear-ended waiting at a stop light in 2005. Although there was no signification damage to the driveability of the car, the rear bumper, quarter panels, and hatch needed to be replaced, so even at that time...on only a 5 year old car, the other driver's insurance totaled the car. Not wanting to spend even more on a used 2000-2002 9-3, after some investigation, I opted instead to let them total it and then buy it back as salvage. Sure, it has a salvage title now, but I don't care as it still drives great 7 years later. I ended up coming out even by finding a small body shop with low overhead run by a guy and his wife (he did the work, she handled the books). He did a good job and worked with me to decide what parts to replace and which parts to just repair. So, depending on how long your friend plans to keep the car, that is another option.
