There are two types of fuel trims; long term and short term. A fuel trim is an adjustment to how much or how often injectors pulse. Short term fuel trims are quick adjustments that the ecu makes to adapt to changing performance conditions. BUT, when short term fuel trim adjustments cannot bring the operating fuel ratios back into normal and expected operating ranges, the long term fuel trims kick in and get bumped up. The long term fuel trims adjust much more slowly. They are sort of an accumulation of short term fuel trims. So, long term fuel trims are indicative of a persistent problem that has not gone away.
In conclusion, if you long term fuel trims are in the 15%-50% or more range, you most definitely have a problem. The tricky part is trying to figure out what the problem is.
Google Fuel trims or ltft or stft for more info.
I'm just a Shade tree / Saturday mechanic so somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.
