Perhaps a crack in a line is opening up when hot or the valve is misbehaving intermittently & only when hot...
Here is a good link on replacing vacuum lines & shows where the EVAP purge valve is (on the passenger side front wheel well... just follow the line that is bigger than the regular vacuum lines off head off in that direction from the TB). . If you go into AZ or Pepboys, etc, know the metric to english conversions for the 4mm line.
The EVAP purges the gas fumes from the gas tank/charcoal canister & is only suppose to modulate open at idle (i.e. negative pressure). If the valve is sticking open or not closing fully, or any line is leaking / disconnected, then unregulated airflow is going into the engine... which isn't nearly as much of a problem when the engine needs more air (i.e. above idle), but can be when it needs the least (i.e. at idle). Clamping off the line simmulates the valve being fully closed, and if that is where the unregulated air is coming from, it blocks it off.
If it is the EVAP purge valve, the part is not that expensive & is an easy DIY... as are the 4mm vacuum lines, (less than $10 for basic rubber). If the vacuum lines have not been replaced in a while, just go ahead & do it.
