...inserting a screw into the side of the plastic heaterbox to slightly distort it, thus slightly altering the tolerances and allowing the drum to move a bit more freely. Although it sounds primitive, this was an official bulletin from SAAB. I can search and try to find the document online, or maybe Anders is aware of this document as well.
I had the knob/rod break on me on literally a 6 month to 1 year basis ever since my 1999 9-3 was brand new. The dealer just kept popping new knobs on it. Once I did the above fix myself, the knob moved noticeable smoother, and I want to say I am going on 5 years now without it breaking, it and feels like it moves free enough such that it will never break! :)
