I had one case where the clutch was about shot, but before it started slipping the transmission seemed to seize up as you describe - it had 97k miles so I figured might as well take it apart the clutch has failed -
ironically the clutch disk hadn't (though it had almost no life left before eating rivets) - the bearing had failed and come apart, binding up the whole setup -
this would explain your lack of any gears as well as making it worse when re-aligning the shifter and also the strange smell (that's likely good disc getting eaten up...)
No way to tell without taking it apart as I couldn't see anything through the inspection port that showed a bad bearing. I suspect in your case they did not replace the clutch bearing as some kits don't come with it and shops find out the hard way it's an integral slave and don't want to pay the extra $$$!
I skimmed your posts pretty quickly, did you get the old bearing when the disk was done 50k ago?
