Following up from the General board. Each car manufacturer seems to have a choice of multiple OBD 2 protocols that is used when building the fuel injection systems and how they talk to a scan tool.
On one of my $6000.00 scan tools (it's actually the Volvo factory tool up to 98, 04 C70) I have 4 different protocols + CAN but I still can't talk to Land Rover and Jaguar. A friend of mine that have a $300.00 generic code reader can talk to those two brands as well as others.
Here what I can tell is the OBD2 socket for a 99 9-3 with T5 fuel injection system.
Power is coming in at pin 16 and 4-5 is two different grounds. So as you can see, it is only three pins left for scan tool to talk to everything else on the car. WIS says that pin 7 is what's used for Tech 2 to talk to most of the car through the DICE.
I can't find if generic OBD2 is using that pin or any of the two others.
I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that their system is not not fully compatible yet with all cars manufactured.
