The side effect is they also protect the rotor, but I was shown long ago the way they are shaped is to either force air into or direct hot air away from the brake discs so that when they are used hard they don't fade and/or fail!
On a Viggen I would DOUBLY cringe removing them as you are way more likely to have cracks appear on the grooves or holes... Put new ones on, your pads will last longer for sure
