Greasing the cable is best effort. apply it to the cable and try and work the cable back and forth to work it into the housing. If you are really meticulous, you could warm the grease, and try and work it into the cable housing, but that may be going a bit far. Or dunk the cable housing in hot water, keeping the ends out, and use the heat to allow the grease to work into the housing. Again, this may be going a bit far. I found I only needed one strap to replace the cable.
