Symptoms of worn timing chain/guide

My girlfriend's 1995 2.3 N/A engine (with distributor) has just over 300,000 miles on it. Over the last 20k, we've had a problem with the engine stumbling during driving - it can be replicated by trying to maintain a constant speed on a flat surface...slight changes in the acceleration to adjust speed causes the stumble. It pulls fine under acceleration.
I've changed everything else I can think of (coil, wires, plugs, fuel pressure regulator, air bypass valve, new vacuum hoses, distributor) to no avail and it is slowly getting worse. I'm thinking that the timing chain may be either stretched or the guides are worn enough to cause slop which causes the stumble. Sound likely? What specifically do I look for if I was to pull the cam cover to inspect the chain and guides (and is that enough? Does it maybe require the head to be pulled?).
Thanks for thoughts! I've replaced a head gasket and timing guide in the past, but unless the slop is massive, I can't really imagine how to specifically decide if there is a problem with the chain or guides...
