Played 9 holes in the evening last night, got in the car to come home, and I was met with a dead battery. Was lucky to get a jump from a guy in the parking lot, and as soon as we disconnected the cables, I could tell something was not right - numerous lights warning lights were flashing, the car stumbled slightly, etc. Seeing that I live ~2 mins from the course, I took my chances getting home, and made it, with the car conking out literally as I pulled into the driveway. I jumped it again with a spare battery, and with the freshly charged battery connected, it ran fine; disconnecting the new battery resulted in the same symptoms. I checked the voltage while the car was running with the new battery hooked up, and as I suspected, it was at 12.02 volts and declining. No charging.

In order to at least be able to move the car, I hooked the battery up to a charger, and went in to have dinner.

At about 3 AM, I was jolted out of bed by the alarm screaming. Turns out my GF had unplugged the battery charger (!) and the car and the battery were again stone dead. After plugging it back in, and turning the ignition on and off once, the alarm quit.

2 questions: 1.) Any way to determine if this is a voltage regulator, or is it most likely the alternator?
2.) what is the relationship between the main battery and the alarm system? Everything I've read indicates that the alarm antics I experienced were the result of a dying alarm battery - but I did not receive a "service theft alarm" warning. Was this a particularly unfun coincidence, or was a stone-dead battery somehow to blame? Can I buy a new battery? I do not see such an item on the sponsor sites...

Thank you all in advance.

Car is a '99 9-3 SE, 155k miles.
