If I were you I would shop around for a good used motor. The best set up would be to take a saab 9000 bottom end, or at least the crankshaft/pistons. Then remove balance shafts, run a t7 head and you will have a saab engine good for 300,000+ miles. When GM had bright ideas to make things weaker in the t7 motor they really messed up. the saab 9000 internals are bullet proof. You could use a t5 9-3 engine used in the 1999 and remove the balance shafts and chain. They are a weak link and dont do much. with a used engine you can remove all this in 1-2 hours. Talk to dave kennedy at lesco machine shop in SLO. He knows more than almost anyone about this stuff. I bet you can get a nice set up like this for $1000 or less if you shop around. Make sure you do the PCV recall mod. T7 cars are known for a sludge issue.
