Think twice about replacing your door speakers... Posted by ryan [Email] (#2222) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ryan) on Wed, 11 Dec 2013 20:15:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I just got all new speakers for my Viggen (from Crutchfield), and got to the doors (dash speakers were a breeze), and realized that it may not be worth replacing them. I got some nice 6.5" Polk db651S speakers and upon seeing the factory ones, noticed that:
1. The factory speaker stand off from the door seals the speaker to the door panel so that all sound leaves through the door grill. The new speaker will not fit on this, and requires that you remove the stand off, and use a generic mount to secure it against the inner door skin. The speaker is now inches from the door panel, and sound will end up getting trapped between it and the inner door skin, causing reverberations and whatever else.
2. The factory speaker is actually about 1/4" larger in effective surface area, so it is like a 6 3/4 woofer already.
3. Short of buying an actual 6.5" subwoofer, or buying a component speaker set and throwing away the crossovers and tweeters (all of which is $$$ to begin with), you are generally forced into buying at least a 2 way replacement speaker, and that tweeter will be useless because of the low frequencies being sent to these two speakers from the factory amp. Because of driving a tweeter, the replacement speaker will have an even more impressive RMS rating than the factory speaker (in my case 55w vs 30), but some of that can't even be counted for the capabilities of woofer on the replacement speaker.
Well long story short, there's a lot of room to work with on this opening, so I'm returning the Polks and either continuing to run factory or upgrading to 6.5" subs in the doors and upgrading the factory amp. That would be expensive but a pretty stealth subwoofer install!
