Thanks for the response.
First thing I did with this car was to remove the valve cover to peak at the top. All look really good. But, having read about some motors having clean tops and dirty bottoms, I went ahead and dropped the oil pan since the car was up on blocks for exhaust work. The oil pan was as clean as the top, no sludge, gue or debris of any sort. BUT, the pickup tube had significant clogging, so I replaced that. Just wondering what the future will hold... haven't put the car on the road yet as my son took over the garage to overhaul his 1998 9000CSE.
Interesting that your 01 SE made it to 166K w/o kit #6, maybe you did the frequent oil changes? This is good news for my Viggen (144K), having read too many stories of these motors failing at 60K from sludge.
What was the 2002 sludge recall? My understanding is that kits 1-5 didn't work or made matters worse; only kit 6 got it right. So I've read.
