I bought mine in mid-August Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 30 Dec 2013 14:16:38 In Reply to: Re: Get a Viggen!, Tim, Mon, 30 Dec 2013 13:53:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I am a Newbie to Viggen ownership. Since these cars are now 12 to 15 years old I consider anything under 75K miles to be low mileage. Viggen specific components are no longer being produced by Saab Parts AB and are becoming rare fast!
Seats often show abnormal wear on the driver's side bolsters and, based on my experience getting the seat bolsters restitched in my '08 9-5 Aero, expect to pay $500 for either a used replacement seat (if you can find one) or repair of the existing seat.
The engines need the same TLC as the engine in your past 2000 9-5. Namely a new PCV system and potentially new head bolts. $200 for parts if the PO did not do this work. (I just ordered these for my car)
Also plan on installing on a Viggen Steering Rack Stiffener if not done by the PO. This is also about $200 for the part. (In the Spring for me)
The convertible Viggens should receive a 6-point sub-frame brace to stiffen the front end, $300 part. And all Viggens should receive a stiffer rear anti-roll bar, ~$100 part. (In the Spring again for these)
The 5-spoke Viggen only 17-inch alloy wheels are notoriously soft and easily dented. Mine was converted to 16-inch SE wheels and I am looking for used Saab 17-inchers to replace these. I probably won't go with the Viggen 5-spokes due to their history/reputation.
Make sure the car has the Viggen engine. You can tell by the the Viggen symbol cast into the valve cover.
Make sure the car is a true Viggen and not a SE Convertible with Viggen badges. You will see a 'G' in the eighth position of the VIN.
Check colors against the "Viggens by the Numbers" web page written by Steven Wade (aka Swade) while he was employed by Saab as their Social Media expert. Viggens were offered in a very limited range of colors which varied a bit each year. A car in the wrong color is a tip-off that either the year is wrong, it has been repainted, or it is not a true Viggen.
Check proper actuation of the convertible top. Authentic Saab repair parts are priced sky-high or are unobtainable, but aftermarket convertible top specialist companies offer cylnders, line sets, pumps, and the like for far more reasonable prices
Always keep in mind the cost of the upgrades not performed by the PO when looking at cars. Some cars will have all of the recommended improvements while others will have none.
